Its Sunday and Its Gloomy

Weekly Post 2012

My first weekly post for the year.

I usually like the weather in the Northwestern part of the North America. During  Autumn and Winter I generally prefer snow or rain and I really dislike gloom, especially when the gloom meets frigid temperatures. The gloom brings on Seasonal Affective Disorder, other wise known as SAD. This is an extreme from of depression and it seems to be worse when the days are gloomy rather than rainy or snowy days.  At least my friends who suffer from SAD seem to respond this way. I hate depression of any type.

Adding to incidents of depression is Vitamin D deficiency. Cloudiness is the reason the residents of the upper portion of this continent suffer from this deficiency.  Experts say we need 15 minutes of direct sunlight everyday to prevent the deficiency. So, like many of my neighbors I take enough vitamin D to ward off that deficiency and its related depression. Since I get the benefits of living in Portland during the Spring and especially the Summer I suppose it is worth the inconvenience.

At least if it is snowing there is a reason for the frigid temperature, most everyone is snuggled in their winter wear. Their faces peek out from beneath scarves and coats with  the healthy glow of bright pink skin. They walk at a faster pace; at least those who aren’t playing in the snow. Ah, the childlike glee of adults and their kids when the snow becomes a game! Snowmen are growing up from the ground and snowballs fly through the air!

In the rain, there are galoshes, slickers and umbrellas of all colors, some conservative, others are bright and shiny. These colors are a prime reason I love the rain; pun intended. The rain brings warmer weather. The trees and bushes begin to sprout little green buds. Bulbs push thorough the moist soil bringing green stalks with the promise of tulips, daffodils, and jonquils to name a few.

Last year a college student encouraged a few of his friends to help him plant 1000 bulbs on along a highway because he thought the grassy hill needed some color. That section of the highway was so colorful for months. I hope they bloom again this year!

Post addition: Joy just informed me there are songs with similar titles. These songs are about suicide. It was not my intention when I titled this post. However, SAD can cause a person to take their life. CM

Yeah that is very cool, I really loved hearing where they came from. It was on the news when people asked about the cost of planting them, thinking the city or highway department had planted them.
I look forward to them each year.

Thank you for visiting my site. I will pop over to yours shortly.

It is hard to make it through the gloomy days of winter. They named SAD well because gloomy days seem to steal our energy as well as our joy. Hope all your days are filled with sunshine.

It is nice to see your greenery. It will be months before we see anything sprout!
